Math vs. Mathematics: Using Desmos to Honor Student Thinking and Value Student Input

Date: October 4, 2022

Seymore Papert viewed mathematics as one of the great jewels of achievement of the human mind instead of what he called math – the boring stuff kids do in schools with putting in numbers. Technology can help create meaningful learning experiences that honor student thinking and value student input, similar to Papert’s vision for mathematics. In contrast, it technology can also be used to have students do math by just putting in numbers. This presentation will show how Desmos can support teachers in implementing meaningful learning experiences.
